Cardiva drives healthcare logistics digitalisation with Easy WMS
The medical technology company digitalises two warehouses with Mecalux’s Easy WMS software.
Medical device company Cardiva has deployed Mecalux’s Easy WMS warehouse management system in its two facilities in Spain. The software ensures product traceability and automates tasks such as location and order organisation.
Cardiva: Future-forward medical innovation
Cardiva markets and distributes a wide range of medical devices. Its catalogue includes diverse products for various specialities, such as cardiovascular and neurovascular interventions, radiological procedures, haemodynamic treatments, pain management and vascular, joint and spinal surgery. Founded in 1989, Cardiva has over 160 employees and a catalogue of 6,000+ product SKUs serving more than 300,000 patients annually in Spain, Italy and Portugal.

Innovation is at the core of the medical technology company Cardiva. A clear example is the distribution in Spain of an AI-based platform for rapid stroke diagnosis. Moreover, it recently created a dedicated division for digestive and urological treatments, including a new generation of stents.
Cardiva also embraces innovation in logistics by implementing advanced technological solutions. It recently deployed Mecalux’s Easy WMS warehouse management system to ensure full traceability across its supply chain. “As a business in the medical sector, we must meet strict requirements in our facilities to obtain ISO certifications and the necessary authorisations from the Spanish health authorities. Our suppliers also audit us regularly to guarantee we deliver high-quality, reliable service to hospitals, clinics and healthcare professionals,” says Javier Gogénola, Director of Logistics and Procurement at Cardiva, founded in 1989. “The warehouse management system allows us to optimise operations, document every movement and maintain precise control at every stage of the process.”
Easy WMS oversees Cardiva’s two logistics centres, in Lezama and San Agustín del Guadalix, Spain. From these facilities — equipped with Mecalux pallet racking and picking shelves — the company distributes its products to clients across the Iberian Peninsula and Canary Islands.
Cardiva’s supply chain stands out for its complexity. The organisation manages a catalogue of more than 6,000 SKUs for medical specialities such as vascular surgery, cardiac surgery, trauma surgery, neurosurgery, radiology and pain management, among others. “Each business area operates independently, with its own objectives and procedures. That calls for highly coordinated logistics operations tailored to each speciality,” says Gogénola.
Constant drive for efficiency
In its pursuit to lead Spain’s medical device distribution market, Cardiva continually modernises its logistics processes. Previously, many operations were manual, including customer service and order picking. Each request was processed through the ERP system and logistics staff had to select the specific materials for each shipment individually.
“Implementing Easy WMS has resulted in full process automation. Before, warehouse operators needed extensive knowledge to locate the right materials for each order. Now, using an RF scanner, the system guides them directly to the product’s exact location,” says Gogénola.
The Mecalux software has been integrated with Cardiva’s ERP, developed in-house by its IT team. Both systems are synchronised to manage operations across the logistics centres in Lezama and San Agustín del Guadalix.
Receiving and putaway
When managing more than 6,000 medical product SKUs, order is essential for avoiding mistakes. Cardiva receives thousands of medical devices every day at its two warehouses, shipped by suppliers from 23 countries. Therefore, strict control is required from the minute goods arrive.
Easy WMS records all incoming items and assigns them a location based on criteria such as available surface area and the FIFO (first in, first out) strategy. The Mecalux software has also enabled Cardiva to organise SKUs using a logic that maximises storage space. “The new way of working has significantly streamlined both receiving and putaway operations. Without this system, we’d have to manage everything manually with spreadsheets — a much slower and error-prone process,” says Gogénola.
Order fulfilment and shipping
Picking is one of Cardiva’s most demanding logistics processes. The company handles more than 50,000 shipments a year from its two warehouses, serving hospitals, clinics and healthcare professionals.
Guided by Easy WMS via RF scanners, operators move through the facility retrieving the products needed for each order. They then sort the goods in the shipping area by route and priority so the shipping agency can deliver them as quickly as possible.
“Thanks to the integration between Easy WMS and our ERP system, all order data is automatically sent to the carriers. This improvement speeds up picking and helps us provide better service,” says Gogénola.
Traceability: Crucial in the healthcare industry
“Traceability is critical in healthcare. We work with implantable products — devices designed to be placed inside the human body. Making sure they’re stored under the right conditions is a top priority. That’s why we record every detail of each item, including its SKU, lot number, serial number and expiry date. This used to be a highly meticulous manual task prone to error. But with the help of the WMS software, we now handle it automatically,” says Gogénola.
At a company like Cardiva — with over 6,000 different SKUs and multiple business units operating independently — digitalisation is not an option but a necessity. “It allows us to operate efficiently, maintain control over every item and guarantee patient safety,” says the Director of Logistics and Procurement.
Powering healthcare through smarter logistics
Cardiva sees logistics digitalisation not just as an operational upgrade but as part of a deeper commitment to healthcare professionals and, most importantly, patients. Mecalux’s Easy WMS has helped the business ensure fast, secure deliveries. These capabilities are essential in a sector where every minute counts and every product can mean the difference between illness and recovery.
“Warehouse digitalisation has completely transformed our operations, with a cross-functional impact across the company. All departments are now much more coordinated and streamlined. We fill orders faster and with zero errors — if the system says to pick product A, there’s no chance of accidentally grabbing B,” says Gogénola.
Easy WMS has completely overhauled our way of working. Now, we fill orders faster and with zero errors.
